NEWS AND RESULTS

PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA FOIL LPJS COMPETITION

Congratulations to Dominic, whose win in the Portsmouth and Southsea U9 foil competition this weekend (3rd June) moved him into second place in the national rankings in the LPJS series behind our own Oliver Alford. Great to see two club fencers topping the rankings, and we look forward to some close competitions between them in the Autumn!

WARWICK EPEE & WREXHAM FOIL LPJS COMPETITIONS

Another successful weekend for Kenilworth fencers - our sole competitor at the Wrexham
LPJS foil competition, Oliver Alford , took gold in the U9 boys event, sweeping all
competition aside and winning all pool and DE fights.
Meanwhile a massive entry for the Warwick Epee competition didn't deter our fencers -
Ella took Bronze in an extremely strong U15 girls field of 24, and Lucas was the star
perfomer in the U13 boys, taking 10th place in a field of 54
followed by Will (18th) and Finlay (35th) - well done to all of them!

2011 BRITISH YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

An amazing performance by Kenilworth Sword fencers at this weekend’s British Age Group Championships saw a record FIVE medallists, including one British Champion.

Duncan exceeded his own expectations with a brilliant bronze medal in the U14  Epee, while Lucas went out to the eventual winner both times in coming 7th in the U12 Epee and 5th in the U12 Sabre.

Ellie and Ella both made the final of the U16 epee, where Ella was also knocked out by the eventual winner when Ellie went on to take the U16 Epee title at the age of 14.

All our finalists performed exceptionally well, often giving older and more experienced opponents a closer fight than expected and contributing to the club’s best ever performance at the BYC finals. Well done all!

BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL

Ellie put in a strong performance in the pools at this senior open event, winning her pool and going into the DE seeded 7 th  out of a entry of over 90  - unfortunately she was unable to keep this up in the DE and went out 14-15 in a close L64 fight to finish 33rd. Still, a promising result in an exceptionally strong senior competition.

NOTTINGHAM OPEN

Despite suffering from a chest infection and needing an injury break in the semi-final, Ellie put in a sterling performance to come second in this senior open competition, at one stage fighting back from an 11-4 deficit to win the semi final before running out of steam and losing out 13-15 in a closely fought final. Well done, Ellie!

ETON LPJS

Our sole representative at the Eton LPJS foil competition saw Oliver Alford taking on a bigger U9 field than he had ever experienced before – but, undaunted, he came through two rounds of pools and fought his way through three rounds of direct elimination to take a well-deserved second place, completing a full set of medals in his first three Leon Paul competitions. Congratulations, Oliver!

WARWICKSHIRE AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

The first three-weapon Warwickshire Age-group championships in March 2011 saw a whole host of medals for Kenilworth fencers – more than one for some of them! The club’s medallists were:-

Boys U13 Foil  -Gold Lucas Hateley, Silver Will Southall

Girls U11 Foil  -Gold Kate Matthews

Girls U15 Foil – Gold Ella Southall

Girls U15 Epee – Gold Ella Southall, Bronze Beth Swain

Boys U13 Sabre – Silver Lucas Hateley
Boys U13 Epee - Gold Will Southall

AND MORE BYC SUCCESS!

The Epee qualifying event on the 30th January saw more success for Kenilworth fencers. Lucas made it third time lucky after two silver medals, winning the U12 Epee in style. Ella narrowly missed out on a double victory, coming second in the U16 Epee event.  Duncan made up for missing the foil qualifier with a great third place in the U14 Epee, and Alasdair seized the final qualifying place in the U18 epee. They join Ellie whose bronze medal in last year's final gave her a bye to the finals this year.

Congratulations to them, and to all the Kenilworth competitors in the BYC qualifiers this year.

BYC SUCCESS!

A full set of medals for Kenilworth fencers at the WM BYC qualifying foil event on the 22nd January.
Ella kept up her unbeaten record at the qualifiers, winning the U16 Foil event.
Will coped brilliantly with moving up into the biggest event of the weekend, the U14 boys event, coming 3rd and qualifying for the national finals in May.
and Lucas was narrowly pipped at the post for the U12 title, coming second by only 2 hits but also qualifying safely for the national finals. He also followed this up with a Silver in the sabre qualifying competition later in the day, having only recently taken up the weapon, and will be going for a hat-trick of medals next weekend in the Epee.

Well done to them, and to all the other Kenilworth fencers who took part, and good luck to the fencers taking part in the Epee qualifier next weekend
.

A weekend of great Epee results

Two great results this weekend for club fencers:-

In the Elite Epee U13 competition in Ashtead, Surrey, Lucas came a brilliant 3rd place in a large and experienced field, showing great determination in winning his DE fights by narrow margins (twice by 15-14)  to reach the last 4. Well done, Lucas!

And in the London International Epee, Ellie helped her cadet , all aged 15 or under, to a great 2nd place, winning all of their pool fights and making their opponents in the final,  a team all ranked in the top 20 of the senior national rankings, work hard for their victory in their toughest match of the day. Well done to the Space Cadets!
